I’ve heard through the grapevine that people don’t really get why I’m here in a yurt in the wild winter in Wales… and I’m sort of surprised about that. When I left the Amazon Rainforest the thing I missed the most is the extraordinary sound of the rain and its attendant nature. Now what I’ve created is the cold Welsh version of the Amazon rainforest…. in fact with all the storms we’ve had in the last five weeks I think it must be wetter than the rainforest! Living under canvas is at least as loud as living under palm leaves. In fact it’s living inside a drum. The feeling of being immersed in the elements is something wild, scary and utterly compelling. It will be hard to leave when the time comes although I won’t object to a bath with hot running water in the same building as me!
But along with the reasons I came here of falling in love with the dark, deepening my communication with the natural world, and inspiring my imagination to write and film, I’ve realised I’m here to track and find the worlds most magnificent untameable beasts! Not for the faint-hearted of course. Once I’ve met them and got to know them a bit better then I’ll share their magnificence with you too.
